The kitchen has had a little bit of a refresh. It will never be completely done until we accomplish our grand plan of removing some walls and giving the kitchen more functional space but until we get to that, we decided to repaint and redecorate. The kitchen has been changed several times over the years and it will undergo at least one more major renovation. We found an envelope of photos that capture the inside of the house in an earlier time which was neat.
Originally there was a butler’s pantry between the kitchen and the dining room. That pantry then led into the actual kitchen where the “magic” happened. On the other side of the butlers pantry would have been a storage room for the food.
This is what the kitchen looked like (not sure on the date of these photos).
Now move forward seeeeveral years and we have our kitchen today. Before we purchased the house, the kitchen had an update that slightly reconfigured the kitchen. The walls of the butler’s pantry were removed, walls were updated with wainscoating replacing the tile and the white paint was removed off of the trim.
The wainscoting was distressed to match the kitchen cabinets and the walls were a butter cream color above. You can see two grey patches on the wall as that is what we originally discussed for paint colors in the kitchen.
This is after we got everything painted but before we added the artwork.
This is the butlers cabinet (still intact and beautiful as ever) and where the edge of the count tops are is where the wall of said pantry would have been. It was removed to open up the kitchen space.
The left side of the pillar would have been the butler’s pantry and the right side would have been the food storage. Where I am standing to take this photo what the actual kitchen which you can see in the photo above. The old ice box was where the fridge currently stands. The photo on the right shows the door to what used to be the ice box. That is the back porch of the house. That brick wall(back wall of the house) is the wall we will eventually remove to expand the kitchen another 9 feet. That is on our 10 year plan since we will have to remove a structural wall of the house. It will eventually feature a professional kitchen (which will make S happy since he is a professional chef).
These are after everything is completed. The top left photo shows the original servants staircase that goes from the kitchen and comes out at the second floor. The top right picture goes along with the “Fiat Lux” blog about me installing the under cabinet lighting. (Don’t mind the booze, we occasioanlly have guests over (and I may like to have a cocktail as well but don’t judge).
Sorry for the winded post! We will revisit this room in about 10 years (hopefully).
